2:11 As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a fiery chariot ¹  pulled by fiery horses appeared. ²  They went between Elijah and Elisha, ³  and Elijah went up to heaven in a windstorm.

66:15 For look, the Lord comes with fire,

his chariots come like a windstorm, ⁴ 

to reveal his raging anger,

his battle cry, and his flaming arrows. ⁵ 

Habakuk 3:8

3:8 Is the Lord mad at the rivers?

Are you angry with the rivers?

Are you enraged at the sea? ⁶ 

Is this why ⁷  you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, ⁸ 

your victorious chariots? ⁹ 

[2:11]  ¹ tn Though the noun is singular here, it may be collective, in which case it could be translated “chariots.”

[2:11]  ² tn Heb “look, a chariot of fire and horses of fire.”

[2:11]  ³ tn Heb “and they made a division between the two of them.”

[66:15]  ⁴ sn Chariots are like a windstorm in their swift movement and in the way that they kick up dust.

[66:15]  ⁵ tn Heb “to cause to return with the rage of his anger, and his battle cry [or “rebuke”] with flames of fire.”

[3:8]  ⁶ sn The following context suggests these questions should be answered, “Yes.” The rivers and the sea, symbolizing here the hostile nations (v. 12), are objects of the Lord’s anger (vv. 10, 15).

[3:8]  ⁷ tn Heb “so that.” Here כִּי (ki) is resultative. See the note on the phrase “make it” in 2:18.

[3:8]  ⁸ tn Heb “you mount your horses.” As the next line makes clear, the Lord is pictured here as a charioteer, not a cavalryman. Note NRSV here, “when you drove your horses, // your chariots to victory.”
